Former Coast Guard Aircraft Technician Owns Local New Braunfels, Texas Big Frog Shop
After being stationed in California, Oregon, and Alaska as well as doing four years of contract work in Afghanistan, Mark Maniscalco and his wife wanted to stay in the small community of New Braunfels, Texas where they were enjoying raising their young children. The U.S. Coast Guard aircraft technician and his wife, Jenni, had moved to New Braunfels outside San Antonio in 2010 for its small-town feel, community support as well as its proximity to the company through which Mark did work in the Middle East.
When his contract ended, the family with middle schoolers now was comfortably settled and didn’t want to leave the Texas Hill Country to pursue aviation jobs in a big city like Houston or Dallas. Mark looked for options. He went to a job fair and franchising made sense since veterans are uniquely qualified for success with all the familiar systems, formulas, and procedures already in place. Essentially, Mark loved the idea of “being in business for yourself but not by yourself.”
He and a franchise consultant explored franchise options and Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More kept appearing at the top of the list. It was an established brand, had well-run systems and support, recognized customer service, had a product Mark and Jenni could get behind, offered “family-friendly” hours of operation, and had highly respected leadership including a president (Tina Bacon-DeFrece) whose own father was a commander in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Mark and Jenni signed the franchise agreement in July of 2015 and opened their shop for business just four months later, on November 18th. Over the next five years, Big Frog developed a respected name and strong customer base but when 2020 hit, it was a bit like starting over again, Mark said.
“The pandemic definitely hit us hard and we had the same worries in 2020 about payroll and cash flow as we did when we first opened our doors in 2015,” Mark said. “But business is coming back now and thanks to our wonderful customers, as well as the fact that we get out there and support the community, business is back again.”
With a total of five employees, Big Frog of New Braunfels gives back to the community with planned customer appreciation days, regular non-profit donations, and veteran support including a free custom-designed t-shirt imprinted with their own branch of service on Veterans Day for all veterans and military showing their ID.
